Today is World Oceans Day and serves as an opportunity to reflect on the significance and impact the oceans have on our life.
The ocean provides invaluable resources to the 7.6 billion people on earth and the billions more organisms that inhabit the planet. It is an integral resource in balancing our weather systems and the natural climate cycles.
According to a 2017 NASA report, “Over the last ten years, one-fourth of human-emissions of carbon dioxide as well as 90 percent of additional warming due to the greenhouse effect have been absorbed by the oceans. Acting like a massive sponge, the oceans pull from the atmosphere heat, carbon dioxide and other gases, such as chlorofluorocarbons, oxygen and nitrogen and store them in their depths for decades to centuries and millennia.”
What’s more, many statistics show our dependence as humans on the oceans in order to live and flourish.
• 80% of people live near the shore
• 90% of goods are transported by ocean
• 97% of earth’s water is in the oceans (& lakes)
• 98 -99% of habitable earth is underwater
• Infinite clean tidal, wave and wind energy
Ocean economy is expected to double by 2030 to $3 trillion. At TMA BlueTech, we have AquaOptimismTM about ocean and water. The companies and technologies that are allowing us to have visibility into the activities of the ocean are also providing solution to solve some of the issues faced by the incredible burden increased population puts on the world ocean. We are optimistic that academia, government, and industry can come together and find the best way forward with a science-based approach. The triple bottom-line uses the people, planet, and profit. There is no better example of this coming together than the Ocean.*
